I've been touring for a couple of months now, so I have a lot of travel and then a gig. So I've had a lot of free time to read and catch up on films. A lot of new music that's been... I don't know. Everything is sort of influential in a way. I've been touring with this girl called Alessi - Alessi's Ark - and she's phenomenal and a really unusual person. She's got this incredible view on life and womanhood. And she's just been interesting to tour with. It's been a very good few month for thoughts and exploration. Are there any books or anything in particular that she's turned you on to? At the moment my boyfriend is absolutely obsessed with Steinbeck so I've been getting his hand-me-down books. Last summer I was in America, I did Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden, and I just read a couple of short stories and The Pearl. What are you most looking forward to in your upcoming months of touring and recording? Hmm... I am really looking forward to seeing parts of America I haven't seen before.

" Laura Marling spoke to us recently from her home in London and about the idea of a maternal lineage, rewriting the ideas and tropes that she's absorbed from mainstream culture and what music does best in times of trouble. YouTube Interview Highlights On the album's title and making art for a younger version of herself The title comes from the central song on the album and it's likely somewhat an homage to Letter to My Daughter, the Maya Angelou book, which is a series of essays to a fictional daughter, or to a kind of a wide, broad idea of a daughter; a younger generation of women. And I wrote that song [the title track] with that sort of thought in mind — I'm not, myself, a mother but the idea of a maternal lineage. That song was written thinking about how I would have armed myself, a younger version of myself, against some of the experiences, or the accumulation of experiences that one accrues as a young woman in the world.

Over the past 12 years, she's been nominated three times for Britain's prestigious Mercury Prize, moved from the U. K. to Los Angeles and back again, and has recently begun coursework for a masters degree in psychoanalysis. On Friday, Marling released her seventh studio album; it's called Song For Our Daughter, and it was originally supposed to come out late this summer before stay-at-home orders were issued in several states. "In light of the change to all our circumstances, I saw no reason to hold back on something that, at the very least, might entertain, and at its best, provide some sense of union, " she said in a statement issued last week.

A dozen songs were left to speak entirely for themselves over the course of 80 minutes, the only other form of communication non-verbal glances and facial expressions exchanged with her guitar tech. No word of greeting. Not even much of a smile. The Chapel looked beautiful, light pouring in – not "like butterscotch", for it was the wrong time of day – through the stained glass windows. Candles and a rug adorned the stage, Marling alone on it with just her Martin and Guild guitars for company, clad in boots and jeans and a pale polo-neck. The occasion was a ticket-only benefit for The Trussell Trust and Refuge, two vital charities, so good on Marling for stepping up and stepping out. But perhaps the show might have worked better if she'd taken a leaf from Mary Chapin Carpenter's book and engaged with the audience via less sophisticated technology – anyone who's dipped into Carpenter's series of Songs from Home, 23 so far, Angus the golden retriever an elegant companion, will know what I mean.
"You need to know a lot more than I know to do it well, " she admits. Today, Marling's former identity as songwriter-of-her-generation is fully restored; the 27-year-old is back doing what she does better than almost anyone else. Her new album of folk-inflected rock is her most direct and accessible in years. Fuelled by gorgeous vocals, hypnotic fingerpicking and singalong melodies, Semper Femina is what one might categorise as "classic" singer-songwriter fare in the lineage of Neil Young, James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. What is different about Semper Femina is its vantage point. The lyrics were largely informed by that period in LA and the new relationships she formed there. One, a friendship with a girl called Nouel, became the inspiration for the song of the same name. In it, Marling admires Nouel as she lies sprawled on the bed like the Origine du Monde – Gustave Courbet's explicit 1866 painting of a woman's genitalia. This suggestive gaze penetrates the record, with Marling desiring, idealising and pining for women in the vein of a traditional male troubadour.

"I am my escape route, " she says. Which is why, at the end of Semper Femina, she wasn't walking away from anyone or anything; but setting off to find a new approach to music. The songs she came up with after that last album seemed too familiar, "like a writer who'll write the same book over and over again, " she says. "I think I was in danger of being bored of myself. " So she left her record label and her management, collaborated with the theatre director Robert Icke, wrote original music for Peaky Blinders and formed a duo called Lump with fellow musician Mike Lindsay from Tunng.
